Why Rod Marinelli tempers Cowboys' optimism about Jaylon Smith with a 4-letter dose of realism

You'll read a lot over the next 24 hours about how good Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith looked in practice Wednesday.

For the first time over the last three weeks, the media had a first-hand view of the progress Smith has made over the last year-and-a-half recovering from a severe left knee injury.

Smith had both his ankles taped up - the left one was thicker because it covered the brace that helps him with his drop foot condition - while the other eight Cowboys linebackers practiced without tape. Smith went through all the individual work, some special-teams drills and did some 7-on-7 but didn't participate in the 11-on-11 portion of practice.

What Smith accomplished Wednesday was no different than what he's done most of the offseason. He moved well, both back-pedaling and laterally, caught some footballs and showed that he could cut and finish strong when powering through a blocking sled.

Word of warning: While the Cowboys continue to paint butterflies and rainbows about Smith's progress, no one knows how much he can contribute until he puts on pads and actually tackles someone.
